1. About the Section
An independent section of Plant Pathology was started in 1958. The section of Plant Pathology had inherited the scholarship in teaching and research from people like Dr. S.J Gaikwad and now Dr. K.D. Thakur. This section is imparting education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
The march of teaching and achievements can be judged from the number of alumini it has produced successfully outside the gate of the college. Apart from regular teaching the section also conducts research in Plant Pathology, culture, etc. and extension work.
With the advance of time new horizons in the Plant Pathology section will be visible and research and teaching will be proceeding towards progress and will add new chapter in the volume of learning.
Ø This section undertakes commercial production of good quality biofertilizers, biopesticides viz., Trichoderma, Rhizobium, Azotobacter, PSB Beauveria, Metarhizium etc.
Ø Successfully isolated efficient strains for decomposition of agro waste and it enriches soil with addition of minerals.
Ø Developed low cost technology for soil solarisation.
Ø This section has well established bio-technology laboratory for research and development of biological products.
Ø Experiential learning: To impart training to the under graduate students for Biofertilizers production.
2. Academic Programme:-
The section is offering courses on Plant Pathology to both undergraduate and Post graduate. There are specialized fields under which different courses and projects are conducted in partial fulfillment for award of BSc.(Agri.) and MSc. (Agri.).
a) UG : Seven Under Graduate courses are being offered by this section right from 1st Semester to 8th Semester relating to disease management and Microbiology discipline.
b) PG : For Post Graduate Degree Programme ten courses are being offered relating Plant Pathology, Microbiology and biofertilizers.
c) Intake capacity of M. Sc. Students have raised from 6 (2008- 2009) to 12 students during this year 2009-2010.
The section has well furnished staff rooms, well equipped classroom, with computer, laptop, printers, internet facility, DLP/LCD projector, OHP, Digital cameras, inverters, Research Farms, etc., which are frequently used by the faculties and students. The section has laboratories for teaching purpose. Latest and state of the art laboratory equipments are available with section.
Plant Pathology section of this college has sub sections.
6. Faculty – Agronomy Section
The undergraduate and post graduate education is offered at the college. The postgraduate education leading to M.Sc.(Ag.) is offered at Section of Plant Pathology. The total intake capacity for Post graduate students (MSc.) are as under
MSc.(Agri.) Plant Pathology : 12
So far this section has produced hundreds of post graduates and are occupying responsible positions in different departments in India and abroad. They have brought laurels to the department by their outstanding work and achievement. The section is proud of them.
There are various areas in which the post graduate students do their research work in this section
8. Co-curricular activities:-
The faculty of the section associates with various co-curricular activities pertaining to admissions examination, university sports, social gathering, student’s educational tours, etc.,
9. Research activities and achievements:-
Research experiments related to Plant Pathology are carried out by the faculty of this section. AICRP trials, Inter-university trials, state trials, station trials of various crops
In addition to teaching the section also undertake research activities like mass multiplication of biofertilizers viz. Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillium, Trichoderma, PSB and decomposing materials. These are being made available to the farmers.
Recommendation : During the year 2008- 2009 one recommendation has been approved by the Research Findings Committee by the University. Trichoderma + Trichurus + Cellulomonas or Trichoderma + Trichurus @ 1kg per ton of agricultural wastes is recommended for decomposition within 90 days.
Qualitity control: Department also undertake the quality control of biofertilizers.
Many technologies have been developed by the teaching staff of this section for the Vidarbha Region and Rest of Maharashtra which is beneficial to the scientific and farming community.
10. Extension activities and achievements:-
Besides the main function of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the staff members are actively involved in extension activities like FLDs, exhibitions, shivar pheri, field days etc.
11. Research recommendations (approved in Agresco):-
The faculty members of this section are involved in publication of research papers, books.
